How to Verify a Download Link Before You Use It
Quick checks to confirm a link is legitimate and safe before you paste it anywhere.
A little skepticism before clicking saves a lot of trouble afterward. Here’s a fast checklist.
Look at the domain
Hover over the link (or check it in your clipboard) and confirm the domain matches the service you expect. Lookalike domains are one of the most common tricks used in phishing.
Check the context
Did you request this file, or is it arriving unexpectedly? Unsolicited “download your file” messages are worth extra scrutiny, especially from unfamiliar senders.
Confirm HTTPS
A legitimate share link should use HTTPS. If a link is plain HTTP, treat it cautiously.
Watch for urgency language
Messages that pressure you to download “immediately” or “before it expires in 10 minutes” are a classic social-engineering pattern, even when the underlying file might be harmless.
When in doubt, ask the sender
If a colleague or friend sent the link, a quick “hey, did you mean to send this?” costs nothing and prevents a lot of regret.
